The quarrel was lurking from the beginning, because father likes control and Ewout is uncontrollable. This pet was brought in against his will. The outburst came when Ewout ate his beloved newspaper.

The newspaper was gone and when father discovered that it had disappeared into Ewout's stomach, he became very angry. All his pent-up frustration came out and he kicked Ewout out of the house. The others tried to put the incident into perspective by saying "you have a digital newspaper as well", but nothing helped. Now Ewout sleeps and eats in the garden shed.
